About the Federalist Society

We are conservative and libertarian students concerned with the current state of our legal system. The Federalist Society was founded on the principles that the state exists to preserve freedom, that the separation of governmental powers is central to our Constitution, and that it is emphatically the duty of the judiciary to say what the law is, not what it should be.

Each semester, we work to promote awareness of these principles at UM Law and beyond, through a wide range of activities including speeches and debates, as well as social and networking events. For more information, visit the national Federalist Society website, or contact us.

Scalia's thoughts on the Supreme Court. He seems very bothered by the juvenile death penalty decision, as we all should be since it was a very unprincipled decision. His quote regarding Earl Warren ("You have a chief justice who was a governor, a policy-maker, who approached the law with that frame of mind. Once you have a leader with that mentality, it's hard not to follow," Scalia said, in response to a question from the audience.) seems to me to be a veiled shot at O'Connor since people praise her for bringing her former views as an Arizona state legislator to the Court. Former politicians are bringing down the Court and the next appointees should not be former politicians.
